Dinosaurs and Super Girls

Less of the dinosaurs, more of the supergirls. I have a lot of feelings about comics, ponies, and books. I should draw more dinosaurs, though.

So yesterday I did a meme (shocker!) and passed it on (double shocker!) and someone actually did it (Tinrobo!) and I saw her answers and one of my questions was about drawing requests and she said Twinkle-Eyed Ponies.

And I thought, “You know what? I am up for a challenge.”

So I drew not one but three (!!) Twinkle-Eyed Ponies. Because I have problems. But also I don’t really like drawing standalone ponies because I like telling stories too much! It’s harder to tell a story with just one pony!

The three lovely fillies you see before you are Galaxy (the unicorn), Masquerade (the pegasus), and Gingerbread (the earth pony). Why these ones?

Because my sister had two Twinkle-Eyes but I only remembered Galaxy, and I went to Kimsites to find her and I also drew her two photo compadres.

The problem with Twinkle-Eyed Ponies is that a) they’re a little terrifying in the first place because they just have crappy plastic rhinestones for eyes and b) they really don’t photograph well. Mostly the terrifying part, but combine it with a flash and you get this:

(AAAAGH KILL IT WITH FIRE)

But I think I managed to make them actually look not too scary looking, and kind of cute. Also I like regenning ponies and rehabilitating all their identical hairs, so that helps.

That said, holy crap these ponies and their hair. I could have omitted one or two colors. But that’s just not how I roll. So I kept all four colors of all of their super 80s neon hair (mostly Galaxy, the neonest of them all).

TL;DR: I always TL;DR. I drew some creepy G1 ponies as reimagined adorable G4s! I am also open for commissions :D

I loooove this pony. She was one of the four ponies I owned as a little girl. The only thing I didn’t like about her was the way her tail looks, because those colors don’t blend well.

I may have, uh, cut her tail.

Protip: pony hair doesn’t grow back and you might regret that 2 seconds after you do it.

Wheeeee more ponies!

I’ve been hankering to draw these two for a little while now. Since not long after I drew Glow, actually!

These two lovely fillies are adult G4 versions of Starbow (on the left) and Brightbow (on the right). They are two of the four ponies I owned when I was little. They were part of the Rainbow Babies series of baby ponies towards the end of G1.

The only problem I really ran into was what colors to outline their hair. There’s just something about these ponies that screams 90s, and I’m pretty sure it’s the ridiculously neon nature of their hair and cutie marks. I think my next project might be to draw them as baby ponies, just because I can. :D

Yeah, if Hasbro held onto their trademarks, this is what we’d be seeing. The first generation ponies in this style. It’d be amazing….

I wish SO HARD!!!

Much as I wish that what was such an integral part of my childhood could be a part of the next generation’s childhood, I do not actually mourn the loss of most of these color schemes. Surprise and Twilight’s colors are pretty awkward :/

There’s something about that pink that really bugs me. Possibly just because it’s paired with (mostly) white hair, so it makes her look a little albino/naked mole rat/skinless (to me).

As someone who’s a newcomer to ponies (a brony, as it were), I can respect the idea of wanting to see the original cast in Faust’s style (if you look hard enough you can see a handful of Faust’s concept sketches that did this very thing) but as someone with more of an art background and decent knowledge of animation, the color schemes come across poorly here compared to the current cast. They feel more like bad recolors of the cast that don’t stand out enough against the pastel backgrounds with Firefly/Dash being the only real exception (other than Posey/Fluttershy and Applejack who are largely unchanged).

All of the changes feel for the better for me, the new designs not only employ a broader color palette, but they simultaneously turn some of the G3 embarrassments into fun and endearing characters. A Win/Win in my book.

Oh I totally agree on all counts. The colors are really awkward and I think we got a nice changeup with what ended up happening. The G3 cartoons were pretty terrible (somehow even worse than the original show), but the personalities the G4 cast has been assigned are largely more developed versions of these G1 ponies. But they were really awkward colors and I definitely prefer the colors we have now.

Actually, it’s the wide range of color and odd mixtures that are what I like so much about G1. Originally the series went through a much wider cast throughout the seasons so odd color combos were bound to come up. There was also a lot of pulling from the toy line when certain ponies became more popular (such as mimic) who has what might not be a great palette for marketing but is easily one of the most sought after ponies for collectors. The toy line and the show are both very much tied together. Through season two we’re probably going to see hasbro start to beef up the toy line. It probably won’t ever reach G1 fever but as far as choosing ponies that have “better” color, there are plenty they could have gone with. Dream Valley has the most extensive list of US G1s. There’s no way there aren’t ponies here that fit the marketing bill better than the personas they chose and then altered. Prior to the prototype art that was released a while back, I would have assumed we’d see ponies like Fizzy, lickety-split, heart throb and so on.

I’d argue that one of the charms of the series and toys was the funky ponies. Everyone could have a favorite no matter what their taste might be. These new colors work very well to create personas people can recognize and are profitable but diversity IS a key element of the whole franchise. That’s likely why we’re already starting to see new ponies in the toy line that are not in the show.

And that’s another really good point. I love the diversity of the MLP line. My older sister has so many ponies that she would let me play with (I only actually own 4). I think the new color palette for the Mane Cast works much better than this potential set of combinations, mostly because there are so many more colors the way it ended up (blue/rainbow, pink/pink, white/purple, purple/dark purple/pink, orange/yellow, yellow/pink versus pink/blue, cream/yellow, light blue/purple/pink, pink/white/purple, orange/yellow, yellow/pink).

Looking at the color combinations shown above, they’re generally too similar, and almost all warm colors. As a result, Sparkler looks a little out of place being the only one with a cool body color.

I like the way the new ponies turned out, though, and that’s the key thing. G1 is different from G3 is different from G4. G4 is unique I think mostly because it was developed by someone who played with ponies as a child. It’s the first time that’s happened, so it puts an interesting perspective on what we ended up with for the introductory ponies of the new line.

I really love the new ponies that are coming out and I think their new colors and marks and styles are really fun and cool. I think the only thing I wish they’d do differently so far as the actual toys go is that I wish they’d make more of an effort on the box art. It’s disheartening to see the Mane Cast recolored (sometimes with different hair) over and over and over for the new ponies. The old box art had way more effort put into it. When I was a kid I loved looking at the package backings that my sister kept and I kept the backs from the ones I had.

I drew a Flutter Pony!

Okay, so not technically a flutter pony — a “Summer Wings” pony. Whatever. We always called them flutter ponies.

I’ve been having a bad week and this made me feel a little better.

I like re-genning ponies, but it’s hard. D:

We take a break from our regularly scheduled ponies to bring you…more ponies. Okay, not actually a surprise.

HOWEVER. This isn’t the ponies meme surprise I’ve been working on so diligently the last few weeks. My older sister had a really crappy day at work yesterday (and actually has a crappy day at work most days. Her job is terrible D: ), and I decided that I was going to draw her a ponies picture to make her feel better.

She’s 6 years older than me and was born in 1981, so every year forever she got ponies and played with ponies for birthdays and Christmases and other random presents. But her favorite was Moondancer.

So I made her into a G4 pony!

Also, her favorite pony from the current cast is Fluttershy. And of course Spike had to be in there, since we know he has a crush on Moondancer. :D

Miscellaneous pony groups. They went together, but didn’t quite go with any one of the previous groups.

To further clarify the Flutter Pony thing with Yum Yum, she has a button on her back that you can push to make her wings flap. Her wings were attached to that. I never saw her with wings. By the time I came along, the wings were long gone, haha.

Again, Dream Valley is awesome. I never knew Invisible Wings’ name, and I called Glow “Firefly” and Buzzer “Lightning Bug” because I prefer Glow and the term “firefly”. Yes, I know that Firefly is actually the pink pegasus. : )

All the baby ponies!

Except for the pearl babies. I gave them their own set just to break it up a little. Also, they were my favorites. :D

I know I sound like a broken record, but seriously, Dream Valley was so useful for the pony IDs : )
