You know a class is going to be good when the professor starts off the class with having us watch portions of the Colbert Report.
I like the teacher, but I’m not fond of my classmates. It’s a digital literacy class, and most of my classmates are like LOL PEOPLE USE AVATARS ONLINE, SO IT’S NOT REAL INTERACTION. DIGITAL MEDIA IS KILLING BOOKS AND READERS AND FRIENDSHIPS

So I replied to this just now full of affection, but then I reread it a minute ago and realized how incredibly stupid one of those arguments is.
How in hell is digital media killing readers? Yes, at some point, physical books might go away, and I’ll be sad, but it won’t be for a long time (there are too many people like me who like to have books in their hands). But reading?
Seriously?
How is reading being destroyed by the internet? I know not everyone’s a good speller or grammarian (oh man that’s a word? awesome), and people are getting more reliant on spellcheck, but hey, not everyone’s a good speller. In the long run, it doesn’t really matter.
But I read a lot, and there’s a lot of reading I do on the internet. Articles, forums, blogs. And if I don’t know a word (which doesn’t happen often because I’m 25 now, and most of the words I’m going to run into I’ve already run into), it is so easy to look that shit up.
I know you disagree with those people, but I am kind of wondering how they got to 2012 without actually thinking about how the internet works.
